Tour Overview
This New Year Nile Cruise sails from Aswan to Luxor over four days, timed so the New Year’s Eve countdown happens afloat on the Nile itself. These holidays to Egypt for New Year trade cold weather and crowded parties for mild winter sun, a premium 5-star ship, and a small-group pace suited to American travelers. The route covers Philae Temple, the Unfinished Obelisk, Kom Ombo, Edfu, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple and Karnak and Luxor Temples, with a festive gala dinner marking the turn of the year.
Itinerary
A representative meets arriving travelers at Aswan Airport or train station for the transfer to the ship, with embarkation and lunch on board to follow. The Unfinished Obelisk comes first, still resting in its ancient granite quarry, intended to stand over 42 meters tall before a crack ended its construction. A boat crossing to Agilkia Island leads to the Temple of Isis at Philae, with its colonnades and some of the last surviving hieroglyphic inscriptions in Egypt, before the evening is left free to explore Aswan.
Meals Included
Breakfast on board precedes the sail to Kom Ombo, home to the only temple in Egypt dedicated to two gods at once, Sobek and Haroeris, with reliefs of ancient surgical tools and a small collection of mummified crocodiles. Lunch and afternoon tea follow en route to Edfu, where a horse and carriage ride leads to the Temple of Horus, its 36-meter pylons among the best-preserved in Egypt. The evening brings the New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner and party on board.
Meals Included
A New Year’s morning breakfast is served while sailing toward Luxor, with lunch on board before an afternoon at Karnak Temple, its Great Hypostyle Hall home to 134 columns rising up to 23 meters. The Temple of Luxor follows, connected to Karnak by the 2.7-kilometer Avenue of Sphinxes, with an optional Sound and Light Show recommended for the evening.
Meals Included
A final breakfast on board precedes disembarkation and a morning at the Valley of the Kings, burial ground of rulers including Tutankhamun, followed by the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut rising in three terraces at Deir el-Bahari. The Colossi of Memnon, standing over 18 meters tall, close out the tour before transfer to Luxor Airport or train station for departure.
